The Creation of Sisters of the Sun

I created this space because I am passionate about the liberation of black women. After completing undergrad, I deeply missed the communities I found for black women and knew that I was nourished by being in co-healing spaces with like-minded women.

However, I had constant questions of doubt; I would ask myself,  “Do you really need to create this platform when similar platforms exist?” (ones that already have a big following, at that). In January 2020, I attended a Black Girl Magik event and while in conversation with a Black woman she said, “think about the amount of water companies that exist, they are selling the same product and they all still exist.” Her words reaffirmed and reminded me that yes there are currently  spaces that exist for Black women, but I should not allow that to deter me from  creating my own space.

Sisters of The Sun is a co-healing space created for Black women to share space with each other, be vulnerable and be their authentic selves. The name Sisters of the Sun came to me while reading bell hook’s Sisters of the Yam. For hooks, her intention was to invest in an “individual’s desire to recover, to find a space within and without, where she could sustain the will to be well and create affirming habits of being” (6). It is my hope that with the creation of Sisters of the Sun, Black women are given the space to dream bigger and to create the world that we deserve to live in. It is my hope that Black women will center themselves and realize that we are inherently valuable because we exist.
